Venture capital investors (VCs) want big opportunities, focused on big Total Addressable Markets (aka “TAM”).
TAM involves multiplying A) the total number of “Potential Customers” in a market, and B) the “Annual Revenue/Customer”, and various competitors often each get only a portion of this total potential annual revenue.
Netflix TAM, for example, can be estimated at $15 billion/year, by multiplying A) 150 million U.S. households, and B) say $100/year average price. That’s a big TAM, now split across several competitors, with some customers paying for multiple services and some having none.
